JedEmerson

Jed is currently a Senior Fellow with Generation Foundation, the philanthropic arm of Generation Investment Management, of London, England. He has served as Senior Fellow with the William and Hewlett Foundation and the David and Lucile Packard Foundation, as well as a Lecturer in Business at Stanford Business School. As founding director of the Roberts Enterprise Development Fund, Jed has been called an elder in the field of venture philanthropy and social entrepreneurship-only partially in jest. He spends much of his life on the road, addressing conferences, students and practitioners, both as a keynote speaker and workshop facilitator. He has presented at numerous conferences and events both nationally and internationally including the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland; the Caisse de Depots in Paris, France; and the London Business School, UK. Among other U.S.-based academic institutions, he has spoken at Harvard, Yale, UNC and UCLA. Jed is recognized as an international leader in the field of strategic philanthropy, social entrepreneurship, and, increasingly, corporate citizenship. His work on nonprofit capital markets, foundation strategy, Social Return on Investment, social purpose business development and other areas of practice has been viewed as significant in terms of its broad contribution to the field and efforts to support others engaged in the community application of business skills and practice. In early 2001, Jed began building on his work to date by focusing upon his interest in the Blended Value Proposition (BVP). The BVP states that instead of operating in terms of non-profit and for-profit constructs or a double bottom-line, there is a single, blended value proposition for both for-profit and nonprofit firms, as well as philanthropy and capital investments, with multiple value components. His work on the BVP has been profiled in Money Magazine (http://money.cnn.com/2002/10/28/pf/investing/emerson/index.htm) and Fast Company (early 2004). During 2003, Jed worked with his colleague (Sheila Bonnini) and other team members to five areas of related work (strategic philanthropy, social investing, social enterprise, corporate social responsibility and sustainable development) all of which are efforts to maximize blended value. The full document, supporting materials and a variety of his papers are available at www.blendedvalue.org. Earlier documents edited, co-authored or authored by Jed are available at www.redf.org. His current email address is jed@blendedvalue.net
