Questions on the Social Edge Site Relaunch

by Social Edge last modified 2007-02-06 15:54

Hosted by Jason Clark, Social Edge Web Manager (February 2007)

socialedgenewspaperWe are very excited to bring the new and improved Social Edge to you today. We launched over the weekend, so we've been up for a couple of days, but it's not official until you come and tell us what you think.

if you experience any issues with the site please contact us via the Contact Us page. We will get back with you as quickly as possible.

There are some new features on the site, and new features to come:

  • Patrick O'Heffernan is hosting a series of podcasts where he interviews former Peace Corps Entrepreneurs who are now social entrepreneurs.
  • Charles "Hipbone" Cameron has pre-populated our new Resources Wiki with over 800 entries. Are you an expert on microcredit? Let the community know what you know. Once you log in you can edit the existing entries or add our own.
  • Previously our blogs were hosted on a different platform than our discussions and required a separate password. Now one username and password will allow you to add comments to our discussions, blogs, and podcasts while also allowing you to contribute to the Resources Wiki.
  • We have a new, integrated search in the upper right hand corner of the site that gives you near instantaneous results as you are typing.
  • Member search is still a bit of a work in progress, but for new discussions (and archived discussions soon) you will be able to click on the name/picture of a person and send them a message  via a form that emails them directly without sharing email addresses. Watch for improvements in this area in the coming weeks.
  • Watch for related items to appear in the right hand column of discussions and blogs. We've added tags to all of our content and are refining how we use them to bring you links to the most relevant content.
  • Bookmarklets are at the bottom of the right hand column and allow you to bookmark a page on Del.icio.us, Digg, Yahoo, Google or Reddit.
  • Blogs are accessible from anywhere on the site via the drop down menu above, new and archived discussions are grouped by category in the Discussions menu, and the GlobalGiving Index and other site features are located in the Features menu. Resources Wiki entries are also categorized in the Resources menu.
  • We have added a Site Tour to help familiarize you with the new site.
  • In other site launch related news this week, Global X dishes the dirt on change, and I cover lessons learned in my Untangled post.

And there's more to come! New blogs, new features, new tools - 2007 is going to be an exciting year on Social Edge. Let us know what you think of the new site, the new features and what you want to see next.

Looks nice - Where's the interaction?

Posted by DanielBassill at 2007-02-13 11:15

I think the new site looks good and has some potentially usefull interaction features. However, I'm not sure that I've found where people are interacting, in forums, or in introducing themselves. Part of my reason for posting today is to see how comments will be displayed in discussion forums.

Thanks for the work you're doing to host this community.

Great new site + broken help link

Posted by ifpeople at 2007-02-13 20:51

Congrats on the new site! I am so happy to see something more suited to the community building process. We have used the Plone system you chose for the last three years. In fact, it has become part of our social mission, whereby we train and develop microenterprises by providing them work opportunities with Plone (with our clients) and in a fair trade relationship (called FairSource ) with ifPeople.

Being familiar with the tool, I jumped right in. In working in the wiki, I noticed the "HelpPage" link is broken. It would be nice to have some info on the formatting rules...

Last seven days of one man's life...

Posted by meloflores at 2007-02-19 23:43

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

"EXECUTION" TO SCREEN AT 29TH ANNUAL BIG MUDDY FILM FESTIVAL

NEW ORLEANS, LA – FEBRUARY 19, 2007 – EXECUTION, the fictional story of the final seven days of a man’s life before his execution by electric chair, will screen in-competition at the 2007 Big Muddy Film Festival. Held on the campus of Southern Illinois University in Carbondale, Illinois, The Big Muddy Film Festival is one of the oldest film festivals in the U.S. affiliated with a university. EXECUTION will screen during the festival’s "Death Penalty" segment in the Student Center Auditorium at 2:00 PM on Sunday, February 25th and 9:15 PM on Tuesday, February 27th.

EXECUTION is the only fictional film ever made that stars a real warden, a real condemned man and a real priest. William Neil Moore, who stars as The Condemned Man, spent over sixteen years on Georgia’s death row and came within seven hours of his own execution. He is the only man in America ever to be released from death row for a capital murder he was convicted of and had admitted to. His release from prison is even more amazing due to the fact that he was freed as a result of the efforts of his victim’s family who actually forgave him for his crime and spoke on his behalf at his parole hearing.

Donald Cabana, who stars as The Warden, is one of the most recognized wardens in America and the author of the best-seller “Death at Midnight: The Confession of an Executioner” his 1996 memoir which details his pain and confusion of having to carry out executions. He spent most of his time as the warden and director of the Mississippi State Penitentiary at Parchman, a sprawling former plantation of more than 20,000 acres and at one time one of the country’s most corrupt and inhumane penitentiaries.

"I've personally carried out and have been a part of many executions," said Don Cabana, "and this film takes the audience closer to the actual execution process than any film that's ever been made."

Father Joel LaBauve, who stars as The Priest, is the former chaplain to Louisiana’s Maximum Security Penitentiary at Angola and has ministered to hundreds of condemned men. He has heard final confessions and "walked the mile” with many condemned men on their way to the execution chamber.

The trailer, clips and comments can be found on the film's website: www.executionfilm.com .

EXECUTION is produced and directed by Steven Scaffidi of Ghost Rider Pictures and represented for distribution by Harris Tulchin of Tulchin Entertainment, www.medialawyer.com .

Not quite there yet...

Posted by Heather Mansfield at 2007-03-10 06:13

I am sorry, but I agree with Daniel... the interaction is missing. I see where you can post a comment to a person's blog if that blog is open, but that's about it... and most of the blogs are closed. Plus, you can't view the profiles of the people who posted on the closed discussions... you should be able to click their picture and see their profile. And from what I can tell, you can't insert html into your profiles. I want to link to YouTube videos, to MySpace profiles, to websites... doesn't see possible. All of this makes the Social Edge community seem somewhat closed and one-sided... and bascially top-down... "we're the experts... read what we think"... and that's so 2003! Good framework here and design, but there really isn't much to do here except read... lots of text... hmm... nah. I may be missing it, but it seems more like a portal to blogs than a social network. So quick fixes would change that. Good luck!!
