Craigslist Foundation's 3rd annual NYC Nonprofit Boot Camp

August 16, 2008, NYU, New York, NY.

San Francisco based Craigslist Foundation, along with more than 1,000 nonprofit leaders and social entrepreneurs, is scheduled to commandeer the NYU campus on August 16, 2008 for Craigslist Foundation's 3rd annual NYC Nonprofit Boot Camp.

Craigslist Foundation, a nonprofit organization formed by the creators of Craigslist.org, provides free and low cost programs for nonprofit professionals and
social entrepreneurs. The organization brought the first annual Nonprofit Boot Camp to New York City in 2006. Over 700 attendees from New York area nonprofits enjoyed hands-on educational training, as well as the opportunity to network with each other and area companies that provide services geared towards helping nonprofits. Last year, the program grew to over 1,000 attendees and garnered a 98% approval rating.

With the current economic climate, Darian Rodriguez Heyman, Craigslist Foundation's Executive Director, sees this year's event as an opportunity for not only those currently in the nonprofit sector, but for those that are looking to transition from private sector due to layoffs or buyouts. 'The nonprofit sector is seeing tremendous growth and change. Our annual Boot Camps connect the next generation of leadership with access to the resources they need to build a better world.'

This year's Boot Camp offers seven educational tracks, including Lobbying and Advocacy for the first time in light of the election year. Other tracks include Nonprofit Basics, Fundraising,

Technology, and Social Entrepreneurship, and the program also offers attendees One-on-One coaching from industry consultants and career counselors. In addition to the educational tracks, this year's keynote speaker, Majora Carter, Founder of Sustainable South Bronx, will discuss the blurring of lines between environmental sustainability, social justice, and other fields.

The 2008 New York Tri-State Area Nonprofit Boot Camp will take place on Saturday, August 16th at New York University's Kimmel Center from 8:30 AM to 5:00 PM. The cost for attendees is only $75 with snacks provided. Boot Camp sponsors include Acteva, Convio, CommonGood

Careers, Dboost, Make Change! Trust,New York University's Wagner School of Public Service and New York University's Heyman Center, and major media sponsors include Google, Divine Caroline, Nonprofit Quarterly, Nonprofit Times and Chronicle of Philanthropy.

IISC Workshop: Collaborative Social Change: Designing for Impact in a Networked World

San Francisco, California: September 16-18, 2008 and Cambridge, Massachusetts: September 23-25, 2008

IISC is launching a new skill-building offering: Collaborative Social Change: Designing for Impact in a Networked World which will be offered in September at our learning centers in two locations:

San Francisco, California: September 16-18, 2008
Cambridge, Massachusetts: September 23-25, 2008

Story after story has been coming our way here at IISC illustrating the exciting ways in which new collaborative tools and technologies are allowing social change agents “to do old things in new ways and new things that we never dreamed possible.” These tools – along with network-centric ways of thinking and acting – are heightening awareness of the potential and need for collaboration in our complex and changing world. All of this comes as our understanding of the adaptive nature of social and environmental problems deepens, as our world continues to flatten and shrink, and as the very rates of change accelerate. As Clay Shirky writes in Here Comes Everyone, “We are living in the middle of a remarkable increase in our ability to share, to cooperate with one another, and to take collective action…Most of the barriers to group action have collapsed and without those barriers we are free to explore new ways of gathering together and getting things done.”

With this potential comes some anxiety and uncertainty. When everything seems possible, where and how do we begin? What are the right tools to use and in which situations? IISC’s challenge has been to figure out how to combine our deep experience in collaborative methodology, our understanding of network theory, and that growing potential of the power of Web 2.0 into our large-scale, multi-stakeholder consulting practice. In our experience, the tools for collaboration – whether we’re talking about Web 2.0 or person-to-person interactions – aid us in developing truly innovative and broadly embraced strategies. These strategies, when grounded in “the love that does justice” and new thinking, will result in much greater social impact.

And that’s what brings us to the launch of our newest offering: Collaborative Social Change: Designing for Impact in a Networked World. CSC – as we are calling it – offers you the opportunity to explore the implications of working in a world where barriers have collapsed and where people have extraordinary potential to connect in new ways. You will develop the skills to design collaborative multistakeholder processes and build networks for social change including:

  •  IISC’s Collaborative Change Framework and its applications.
  •  The fundamentals of network theory as applied to networks for social change and the potential power of network mapping.
  •  The power of thoughtful design to cultivate and nurture networks for social change and an array of collaborative process design skills including building relationships in support of networks for social change, stakeholder analysis and engagement strategies, planning frameworks and change methods, process mapping, technical tools to support collaboration, and roles to support each phase of the change process.
  •  An awareness of the impact of your deepest aspirations, sense of purpose, and sources of power and motivation on your work.
We’re becoming increasingly and acutely aware that the global challenges we face call for something more than the focused and passionate efforts of individuals or single organizations. We must develop our capacity to collaborate and build networks in order to have the broad-based and sustained impact called for by these challenging times.

This learning experience will be most powerful if you come with a project in mind – one you’re currently working on or one you’re considering launching. And to maximize your capacity to put the learning into action, we encourage you to come with a colleague.

Our nonprofit rate for the three-day workshop is $650; the foundation rate is $1,000. For more information, or to register for the workshop, visit us at www.interactioninstitute.org or call Chris Toppin at 617.234.2750. We hope you will consider joining us.
And as always, we are interested in hearing about your successes, challenges, and thoughts on the front lines of collaboration for social change.

Esalen workshop on Social Entrepreneurship: from Spiritual Values to Effective Action

November 28-30, 2008, Big Sur, California.

SOCIAL ENTREPRENEURSHIP:
FROM SPIRITUAL VALUES TO EFFECTIVE ACTION
A weekend workshop at Esalen with
John Marks and Susan Collin Marks
November 28-30, 2008
Esalen Institute
Big Sur, California

To Register, go to www.esalen.org

There is a growing longing in many of us to do something that will have an impact on the state of the world – to be a change agent. We envision infusing our spiritual values into the world’s political, economic, and social life, transforming existing systems to create a kind and dignified world for all. We want to be social entrepreneurs.

This workshop will offer the accumulated experience of Search for Common Ground (Search), which grew out of meetings at Esalen in the early 1980's into the world's largest nongovernmental organization working in conflict transformation.  Search now has over 350 staff working in 18 countries on four continents.  The keys to Search’s growth have been creativity and nimbleness, both reflected in the range of its work, which includes TV and radio soap operas in 11 countries reaching millions of people, a project to stop the use of child soldiers, multi-ethnic kindergartens in the Balkans, a Common Ground News Service in the Middle East, the use of sports and the arts to bridge enmities throughout Africa, Asia and the Middle East, and consensus building among polarized communities in the United States.

Search founder and president John Marks and senior vice president Susan Collin Marks have both been awarded prestigious Skoll Fellowships for Social Entrepreneurship.

John and Susan will guide you in focusing and defining your own vision of social entrepreneurship.  They will present the Principles of Social Entrepreneurship and, drawing on their profound experience as social entrepreneurs, offer you individual coaching, as well as drawing on the wisdom of the group.  They will lead you through the many possibilities that arise when you commit to your inner vision of social change. You will leave inspired to follow the call of your heart!

Excerpts from the press release:

"Much of the time, curbing torture is more a question of resources than it is a question of politics and treaties," said IBJ Founder and CEO Karen Tse. "I have seen criminal defenders, police, and civil society come together to uphold criminal justice in some of the most challenging legal climates."

JusticeMakers was inspired by people such as IBJ Fellow and Cambodian lawyer Ouk Vandeth -- passionate, creative individuals who deliver due process rights to the accused.

A former policeman turned criminal defender, Ouk is an apt symbol for hope as the world pauses with the United Nations to commemorate those who have fallen victim to the most vile of human rights abuses.

"Ending torture isn't an unattainable goal," said Ouk. "It is just about guaranteeing people the legal protections afforded to them by law."

“Calling all Earthkeepers” Video Contest

Entrants have a chance to win $5,000 to further their environmental work.

On June 10, The Timberland Company announced the global launch of the Earthkeeper campaign, a movement to recruit one million people to become part of an online network designed to inspire real environmental behavior change.

The Earthkeeper network is a forum where people who share energy and interest in the notion of protecting our planet can share information and inspiration, and the Earthkeeper campaign will be a way to translate lots of passionate talk and ideas into positive, practical action.

Why TBL developed the EK campaign:
There’s an emerging effort by companies to try to figure out how to engage with consumers about the environment. One key question is how to do it appropriately.  Timberland is widely seen as an innovator in CSR practices, and the company believes that businesses have a responsibility to the community and to its consumers to do "good." Timberland's goal is to inspire environmental stewardship by consumers.  Timberland has been "walking the walk," or “Earthkeeping,” for years, and good CSR practices have been critically important internally. Efforts have been shared periodically w/ a niche group of targeted peers and thought leaders through CSR conferences like Ceres and BSR Annual Conferences, but not much energy has been spent in educating consumers of Timberland's CSR in a way that is meaningful and impactful to this important group.

So, what is the Earthkeeper campaign?
As part of the Earthkeeper program, Timberland has launched an innovative global network of online social networking tools, including partnerships with Changents.com, a strong Facebook presence, a YouTube Earthkeeper Brand Channel and a richly-populated Earthkeeper blog. Uniting these various Earthkeeper “channels” is www.earthkeeper.com, a website which allows users to navigate through the Earthkeeper network based on their level of interest in learning more or engaging in Earthkeeping.  Earthkeepers can share ideas and activities via these online venues, making it quick, simple and entertaining to learn, and discuss greener lifestyles. Earthkeeper forums have been created on YouTube (www.earthkeeper.com/youtube), Facebook (www.earthkeeper.com/facebook), Changents.com (www.earthkeeper.com/changents), and the Earthkeeper blog (www.earthkeeper.com/blog).

How online social networking can lead to real environmental action:
We know that most of us are aware that the environment is in trouble, and that many of us don't know how to fix it. The Earthkeeper campaign helps us see that every little thing we do can help- and, together, we can inspire each other to do more. The Calling All Earthkeepers contest invites us to share our Earthkeeping story, and have a blast while doing it!
Calling all Earthkeepers contest:
  • YouTube is a site that most of us use, "just for fun." But what if YouTube was a venue on which real environmental action could be shared, thereby inspiring real eco action among the larger, offline population? The Timberland Company is hosting a revolutionary contest, where everyday Earthkeepers are invited to document and share their own Earthkeeping projects. Earthkeeping can be anything you do to lighten your environmental footprint- from ditching your car for the summer and commuting to work on bike, setting up a communal compost bin in your neighborhood, or adopting an abandoned city lot and creating green space. These projects can be funny or serious, and can be independent projects, group projects, or school projects. Videos can be uploaded until July 26, and will be posted on the Earthkeeper channel at http://www.youtube.com/earthkeepers.
  • You decide how you want to share your story: You can simply upload your Earthkeeping video to the YouTube contest- where the winners in each of three categories -- 1. most humorous, 2. most unique/informative, and 3. most motivating/engaging -- will receive $300 worth of Timberland gear.
  • And, if you are really inspired, and believe you can start an eco-movement with your concept, enter the "Be an Earthkeeper Hero" competition. To win this phase of the contest, you'll need to attract "backers"- but don't worry, we'll give you the tools to do this using the storytelling platform on Changents.com. You'll upload your video to http://www.changents.com/earthkeepers-int, and start promoting yourself by sharing photos, blog entries, podcasts, Twitters and more. The grand prize winner will receive a $5,000 prize, an opportunity to be featured in a 2009 Timberland advertising campaign, plus $500 in TBL gear.
