Global Social Benefit Incubator

Deadline EXTENDED to January 31, 2008 - Apply now for a chance to receive a full scholarship worth US$20,000.

Social Edge is hosting the online application for Santa Clara University’s sixth annual Global Social Benefit Incubator (GSBI), a capacity building program for leaders of social benefit enterprises. Starting immediately, social entrepreneurs around the world should visit www.socialedge.org/features/gsbi to apply online. There is no application fee. Applicants must post their first exercise online by January 31, 2008.  Up to 20 candidates, who best demonstrate a sustainable and scalable approach to addressing urgent human needs throughout the world, will each receive a full scholarship valued at US$20,000.
 
The 15-20 candidates who are selected for GSBI-2008 will be announced no later than April 15, 2008. Those selected from the Social Edge application process will be granted a full scholarship to attend the Global Social Benefit Incubator August 19-31, 2008. The scholarship covers tuition, room, and board for the two-week intensive immersion program focused on venture planning, beneficiary analysis, business models, metrics and successful scaling strategies. Selected candidates are responsible for their travel expenses (airfare, ground transportation, passport, visa).

Spark Seeks Social Enterprises Tackling Homelessness in UK

Win a share of £500,000 prize plus mentoring. Apply by 18 February 2008.

Spark is a highly innovative flagship project, to build and inspire social enterprise to prevent and tackle homelessness. Its aim is to reduce the dependency of many third sector organisations on grants and donations, which offer little long term security for homeless people.

Spark wants YOUR innovative social enterprise ideas for preventing or tackling homelessness.

The top 15 applicants will be announced in February 2008. In April, they will present the business case of their social enterprise to a panel of experienced social entrepreneurs, and the five best ideas will win a share of the £500,000 prize fund, an enterprise 'make-over challenge', and mentoring from experienced entrepreneurs including Nigel Kershaw from Big Issue Invest and John Montague from TREES.

Call for Nominations for the 2008 John W. Gardner Leadership Award

The deadline for nominations is January 31, 2008.

Independent Sector (IS) invites nominations for the 2008 John W. Gardner Leadership Award. The award recognizes a living American whose leadership in or with the nonprofit community has been transformative and who has mobilized and unified people, institutions, or causes that improve lives.

The recipient will be presented with the award at the 2008 Independent Sector Annual Conference in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, which will take place from November 9 – 11, 2008. Independent Sector established the award in 1985 to honor outstanding Americans who exemplify the leadership and the ideals of John W. Gardner, founding chair of IS.

IS honored Susan V. Berresford, president of the Ford Foundation, with the 2007 award recognizing her work worldwide to build leadership in marginalized communities and to strengthen institutions that advance social justice. Community Development Venture Capital Alliance Conference

Robert Wood Johnson Foundation

US $8.25 million program

A new  US$8.25 million program created by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation to support research in the emerging field of health games

On December 7 and 13, the Foundation will host two informational telephone calls to provide an overview of this program and guidance for interested researchers  on how to apply for the first round of funding--up to $2 million--for research on health games that
• increase physical activity and/or
• improve self-care.  

The goal of this new program is to develop theoretically grounded, evidence-based principles for designing and implementing health games successfully, keeping in mind the unique needs specific populations of end users.
