Mind Trust’s Education Entrepreneur Fellowship

Incubator for transformative education ventures is accepting Statements of Intent online now through September 5, 2008.

The Mind Trust’s Education Entrepreneur Fellowship is a nationally unique incubator for transformative education ventures. The Fellowship offers promising education entrepreneurs the opportunity to develop and launch their break-the-mold education ventures and the support necessary for success. Fellows receive two years of salary, benefits, coaching, customized training, a travel budget and more. With this support, fellows will be able to realize their visions and achieve extraordinary results for some of the nation’s most underserved students.
Fellowship ventures target underserved or disadvantaged populations with solutions that attack the root problems in the delivery of public education. The Fellowship is for people who envision entirely new approaches to the challenges of public education, and possess the relentless drive necessary to exploit opportunities to fulfill their visions. Fellows join a growing network of education entrepreneurs dedicated to forging dramatic change in public education.

The Mind Trust plans to select three highly capable people to join the second cohort of fellows. It is expected that the second cohort of fellows will be selected in early December 2008. Each fellow works with The Mind Trust staff to establish an appropriate start date.
Fellows are full-time employees of The Mind Trust throughout the Fellowship. Fellows receive a $90,000 annual salary during the Fellowship and a full benefits package that includes medical, dental, and retirement benefits. In addition, fellows receive stipends of $5,000 per year ($10,000 over two years) for travel and $5,000 per year ($10,000 over two years) for professional development. The Fellowship is a full-time responsibility; fellows should not have additional employment, consulting contracts, or other professional responsibilities. Fellows may live anywhere in the United States during the Fellowship, but will be required to participate in meetings with their cohort of fellows in Indianapolis at least quarterly. In addition, Fellows must include Indianapolis as part of their initial growth plans.

The Pangea Day Mission & Purpose

Pangea Day is a global event bringing the world together through film.

Why? In a world where people are often divided by borders, difference, and conflict, it's easy to lose sight of what we all have in common. Pangea Day seeks to overcome that – to help people see themselves in others – through the power of film.

The Pangea Day Event

Starting at 18:00 GMT on May 10, 2008, locations in Cairo, Kigali, London, Los Angeles, Mumbai, and Rio de Janeiro will be linked for a live program of powerful films, live music, and visionary speakers. The entire program will be broadcast – in seven languages – to millions of people worldwide through the internet, television, and mobile phones.

The 24 short films to be featured have been selected from an international competition that generated more than 2,500 submissions from over one hundred countries. The films were chosen based on their ability to inspire, transform, and allow us see the world through another person's eyes. Details on the Pangea Day films can be viewed here.

The program will also include a number of exceptional speakers and musical performers. Queen Noor of Jordan, CNN's Christiane Amanpour, musician/activist Bob Geldof, and Iranian rock phenom Hypernova are among those taking part.

Philanthropy's Vision: Leadership Summit

Filed Under:

May 4-8, 2008, Washington DC, Presented by the Council on Foundations

The Midwestern philanthropist J. Irwin Miller asked his foundation’s staff members to guide their work by a simple motto. He said, “Ten years from now, what will you wish you had done today?” It is this vision for the future that inspires us to celebrate the common purpose of philanthropy and the benefits of gathering not as separate institutions, but as a noble movement.

Today, we are excited to invite you to join us for an unprecedented gathering: Philanthropy’s Vision: A Leadership Summit, May 4–7, 2008, at the new Gaylord National Resort and Convention Center, just outside Washington, DC.

For the last two years, an international planning committee representing every type of philanthropy has worked to produce this exciting event. The Summit will seek to address the best practices in philanthropy—its leadership, partnership and impact—that enable us to most effectively serve the common good.

We will gather from May 2 to May 4 for pre-Summit meetings, including a special day-long program designed for CEOs and trustees on May 4. We formally begin The Summit on Sunday, May 4, with a powerful plenary on global philanthropy—you won’t want to miss it. The concurrent sessions, organized around leadership, partnership, and impact, will provide you with the strongest material substance of any conference. On Tuesday, we will visit the nation’s capital and sites around the region for one-day mini-Summits focusing on key issues of the day. Several site sessions, with a focus on regional philanthropy, have been designed by the host committee and will be available for attendees to enjoy as part of the Regional day. Our list of speakers reflects the leadership of philanthropy across the globe.

Our message is simple and warm: Don’t miss this historic convening. We are set to provide you with the best possible inspiration and information available for the future work of philanthropy. Take a journey through this registration brochure to learn how The Summit will be structured. Whether you are a trustee, a CEO, or a member of your organization’s professional staff, The Summit is made specifically for you. Whether you hail from a regional association, an affinity group, or a foundation of any type or size, from near or far, this event will speak to your needs. [Find out if you are eligible to attend.]

Take a moment to register and reserve your travel plans, and then relax. We’ll see you at The Summit!

2008 Net Impact Europe Conference

Sustainable Prosperity: Taking on the Global Challenge; June 12-14, 2008 at the Centre International de Conférences Genève, Geneva, Switzerland

In 2008, Net Impact will bring the model of their hugely successful American conference to a European audience for the first time. The American conference is seen as the leading world forum bringing MBA students, graduates and leaders of tomorrow to exchange ideas, energy and passion with leading professionals from across sectors to discuss how business and business skills can impact social change.

In June, Geneva, Switzerland will play host to the 2008 Net Impact Europe Conference. We have the unique opportunity to welcome Mel Young, founder and President of the Homeless World Cup to offer a keynote address providing a link between these two major events. The Homeless World Cup is an impressive example of how football, passion and creative thinking can impact the sustainable prosperity of individuals from over 60 countries.

This year’s Europe conference will address the theme Sustainable Prosperity: Taking on the Global Challenge. The word prosperity captures the economic and social factors that are expected to contribute to improvements in the welfare of the global population.
The two-day conference will cover a variety of topics within four main tracks that participants will have an opportunity to follow throughout the event. The themes for the 2008 Europe Conference are as follows:

Innovation: What Creates Sustainable Prosperity Within this track we will hear from social entrepreneurs, business leaders and partnerships that are offering innovative ways to tackle the challenge of sustainable prosperity. These individuals and organizations have lead the way in creating social impact by harnessing the power of creative and original thinking to create new means to addressing issues of development, climate change, and sustainable business practices.

Leadership: How Organizations and Individuals Impact Sustainable Prosperity The second track will focus on the role that leadership plays in creating sustainable prosperity. Both organizational and individual leaders have a role to play in creating an environment for change and enhancing the capacity of their organization with respect to sustainability, responsible business practices, and corporate social responsibility. We look forward to hearing from academic experts and practitioners about best practices in leadership.

The Global Challenge: The third track will address the efforts to take sustainability to scale. Our speakers will be challenged to discuss the efforts they have dedicated to sustaining a positive social impact on a global scale. We look forward to hearing from Dalberg-Global Development Advisors, Product Red, and others who will be sharing their opportunities, challenges, and best practices.

Managing Investments and Measuring Results: Our fourth track will offer panel and workshop topics related to how organizations measure, evaluate and account for their impact. This theme also offers an opportunity to discuss the emerging role of finance and the capital market in relationship to how organizations quantify their impact. We are honored to welcome Simon Zadek, Chief Executive of AccountAbility to capture the essence of this theme.

New resource for investors in social business: socialinvestments.com

Information on the fast-growing UK social business sector.

Catalyst's new online resource for investors in social business Socialinvestments.com aims to provide current and prospective investors with information on the fast-growing UK social business sector.

The website provides financial information about individual social businesses and details the social, ethical and environmental benefits they help to generate.  It can also be used to research social business sectors, follow specific trends in this space, and gain a better understanding of the investing environment.

A regular flow of relevant news and events is available on the news page and Catalyst has also compiled a glossary of terms commonly used in social business.   Click on the links page to find out about other organisations active in the social business sector.

We want socialinvestments.com to be the site that gives investors better access than exists anywhere else to intelligent commentary on the social business sector and information about the companies within it.  We would like this site to be as useful as possible to the investor and to social businesses and so welcome suggestions on how we could improve our offering.

One of the greatest challenges of building this website has been deciding on a classification system for the social business sector.  After much deliberation we settled on a five-strand system, classifying each company and, where possible, news story by:
  • Industrial sector (and sub-sector): This list was inspired by the FTSE and AIM sector lists because we wanted to keep to a system that was realtively familar to investors.  However, some changes have been made in order to ensure a 'snug fit' to the social business sector.
  • Social, environmental and ethical (SEE) benefit:  This is a list of 24 common benefits brought about by a social business' activities
  • Social business sector affiliation: Some categories, such as organic food, remained uncovered by the first two systems.  This is a list of 23 affiliations, often the way in which consumers, rather than investors, would group social businesses.
  • Size:  We have included information on turnover, profit and employee numbers, so far as it is available.
  • Certification: There are a number of different certifications in use in the social business sector which we thought would be a useful way of categorising some companies.  Examples are Fairtrade and Soil Association.

Please have a look around the site and tell us what you think.

The Corporation for National and Community Service Grants Available

Filed Under:

Grants are for partnerships facilitating better engagement of college students in service through social media.

The Corporation for National and Community Service (the Corporation) announces the availability of approximately $2.3 million of grant funding to support the facilitation of better engagement of college students in service through social media.

Some examples of social media include: social networking (i.e. Facebook, MySpace, Ning, or integrating social networking capacity into existing sites), wikis, podcasts, blogs, RSS feeds, mashups, social bookmarking, widgets, etc. Successful applicants must demonstrate how their program can use these tools to engage increased numbers of college students, especially in partnership with other nonprofit or for-profit entities.

The Corporation will make one-time awards of approximately $100,000 to $750,000 to an estimated twelve eligible applicants for a project period of up to three years. While all applicants can build in funds for subgrants as part of their program model, the Corporation expects to fund at least one partnership dedicated primarily to disbursing small subgrants (under $10,000 each) to seed student-driven projects. This awardee must promote, review, and award subgrants using social media. Under this model, it is expected that the grantee will allocate at least 80% of funding for subgrants.

Eligible applicants include higher education partnerships, defined as one or more public or private nonprofit organizations, or public agencies, including States, and one or more institutions of higher education. Thus, all partnerships must include at least one institution of higher education. Examples of such partnerships include: a national service-focused organization and colleges and universities where it has affiliated chapters; a national non-profit partnering with a Business School to run a national subgranting competition; a regional group of non-profit student organizations working with an institution of higher education which would serve as the legal applicant. Applicants should have demonstrable experience in planning and implementing significant service, volunteering or technology programs.

* You are a student thinking about pursuing a career in social entrepreneurship;
* Your organization is developing a social enterprise for growth or financial support;
* You work for an established not-for-profit organization that could benefit from our many workshops;
* You work in a sector that supports social enterprises (government, corporate, etc) and are seeking firsthand knowledge of the needs and challenges of today's social enterprises.

Highlights will include presentations from Alan Quarry, CEO of Quarry Integrated Communications, on branding and marketing; John Baker, CEO of Aperio Inc., on revenue generation; Cheryl Rose, director of partnerships and projects for the Social Innovation Generation at the University of Waterloo, on engaging universities; Geoff Malleck, associate director of the Centre for Business, Entrepreneurship and Technology at UW, on entrepreneurship; and Bob Copeland, associate vice-president of annual giving and alumni affairs at UW, on seeking sponsorship.

The Social Entrepreneurship Intensive program will be limited to 30 participants. The three-day event costs $250 for students and $450 for community members. COP 9 - CEPA Fair

The Deadline for the CEPA Fair has been extended to the 14th of April.

COP 9 - Communication, Education and Public Awareness (CEPA) Fair
The Deadline for the CEPA Fair has been extended to the 14th of April.
Communication, education and public awareness is central and essential to the implementation of the Convention. It is for this reason that Article 13 encourages the promotion of the importance of, and the measures required for, the conservation of biological diversity through the media and the inclusion of relevant topics in educational programmes. The importance of CEPA to the mainstreaming of biodiversity into a variety of sectors is also reflected in the Strategic Plan. With this in mind, a fair on experiences and best practices in Communication, Education and Public Awareness (CEPA) will be held at the margins of COP-9, in the Federal Ministry of Transport Building. The Fair, which will be organized jointly with the Government of Germany as the host of the ninth meeting of the Conference of the Parties, will include displays and presentations on the following themes:
  1. National CEPA strategies and their contribution to imp
